Lake Magadi: Is it worth a visit?

Nothing could have prepared me for the peculiar day trip that was Lake Magadi. The drive, the environment and the people all added up to create a strange but pleasant experience. Words cannot do Lake Magadi justice but maybe a pros and cons list can help make your decision as to whether Lake Magadi should be on your must visit list!

CONS

1. Its run by a multinational company (TATA)

When we arrived at Lake Magadi, we got to an entrance with a big Tata sign. At first, I thought we were lost but turns out this multinational company runs the place. They have a factory right in the middle of the lake, along with a train track that transports its outputs (it’s illegal to visit the factory). This raises a lot of questions, the biggest one being why such a big multinational company is able to exploit a natural resource while giving its workers deplorable living conditions.

2. Exploitation from locals

There is no official entrance fee or entrance gate to the lake. Once you pass the main Tata gate, you’re own your own to do as you please. However, some locals see this as an opportunity to exploit vulnerable tourists as they claim to ‘run the place’. As I sat on some rocks facing the lake, 3 young boys came to try and sell me jewellery. In the beginning I thought it was harmless but a few minutes later atleast 10 women joined, showering me in jewellery that they refused to take off me even after I asked them to do so. If you thought Kenyatta women were ruthless, I dare you to try Lake Magadi. I would recommend getting a guide to avoid these problems.

3. Its hot

The weather is similar to Coast weather but instead of hot and humid its hot and dry. So make sure you wear appropriate clothing and sun screen.

4. The road is impassable by car

The road leading to the lake and hot springs from the main gate is poorly done so it is impassable by car. Would recommend hiring a motorbike once you get to the entrance of the lake.

PROS

1. Its run by a multinational company

I think this is a good learning experience. You hear/read about these types of companies on the media but I think seeing is believing. This is an opportunity to get firsthand information on the workings of such multinational companies. (Kwa Ground Vitu Ni Different)

2. Exploitation from locals

Not only do you learn the skill of saying no but you get to see the culture of the masai. As much as the methods are not nice, the kind of the jewellery they sell is beautiful and cheap!

3. The road is impassable by car

However, the drive before the Tata Gate is just wonderful. Are you looking for a clear road, no traffic, no police, no speed limit and beautiful views? The road leading to Magadi is only 100km from Nairobi(3hour drive) and I am certain that it will be one of the best drives you’ll ever have.

4. Chance to visit Hot Springs & see the birds

The springs bubble to around 35 degrees, making it a nice spot to relax and take a quick swim/bath. It is also believed to have healing properties to the skin.

Below you can also see a photo of the fun I had with the flamingoes.

So, are you up for the adventure? Up for trying something new? Up for exploring the different landscapes Kenya has to offer?
